Use official NYCPS tests first, then independent digital exams. Review the same day. Do not sit another full test until the last one changed the work.
02Digital SHSAT Format for Fall 2026The current SHSAT is 50 ELA and 50 Math in 180 minutes. Fall 2026 adds computer-adaptive items and strict no-return navigation.
03SHSAT Math Study GuideSHSAT Math rewards a written translation and a check that the answer is the requested quantity. One-step fluency is the floor, not the exam.
04SHSAT ELA Study GuideSHSAT ELA is reading for evidence and editing for the whole text. Prior knowledge does not count. Close choices usually overreach.
05SHSAT Time ManagementELA and Math share 180 minutes. Choose a section order on purpose, set checkpoints that can still change behavior, and use a per-item stopping rule.
06SHSAT Scoring and Practice ScoresOfficial scores come from the pattern of answers and item difficulty, then two scaled sections are added. A practice number is a trend, not an offer.
07How to Build an SHSAT Study PlanKeep a weekly loop of one gap, targeted practice, and a check. Use full exams at the edges. Shrink the plan when the calendar gets loud.
Learn the exam you are actually taking
Read the current format page before buying anything else. Fall 2026 is computer-adaptive, navigation is strict, and habits from older paper forms carry over badly. The retired 114-question digital form and the old paper exam are not what this student will face.
Do the official tutorial. Take one official online practice test as a baseline. Then decide whether the next job is Math, ELA, timing, or exam behavior. If the family cannot name that job in one sentence, another workbook is probably just clutter.
Keep one gap in motion
A week that tries to fix geometry, inference, and pacing usually fixes none of them. Name one gap, practice it on fresh items, verify it, and only then take another full exam.
The Math and ELA guides below focus on the decisions students make on actual items. The timing guide is about the shared clock, and the scoring guide is about what a practice number can and cannot mean. The study-plan page just stretches or shrinks that same loop. The point is not to collect more advice. It is to pick the next repair and do it well.
Do the registration jobs on the official calendar
Eligibility, MySchools access, school ranking, accommodations, and the ticket are not study tasks, but they can wipe out prep if they are late. Confirm dates on the NYCPS enrollment page, because 2026-27 dates can still move. For an eligibility question, trust the counselor or a Family Welcome Center, not a forum thread.
Keep a second path
A Specialized offer is only one possible outcome, so complete the rest of the high school application and rank only Specialized schools the student would truly attend. Registering for the SHSAT does not hold a backup seat anywhere else.

Continue your study plan
Measure, pick one gap, practice it, then verify on new items. Keep that loop even when the calendar gets loud.
