Protect the second section
Over-investing in the first section is just a quieter way to shortchange the second. At about 90 minutes, the student should be ready to submit the first section or be able to explain exactly why they are not. Standard time is still 180 minutes total. The adaptive engine does not award bonus minutes for harder items.
Choose section order by testing it on a full digital exam. Start with the steadier section, or with the one that falls apart when the student gets tired, and keep the better result. Switching the order the night before the real exam adds a new variable when nobody can afford one.
Stopping rules replace 'I'll come back'
Math items and stand-alone ELA items cannot be parked. If the setup is still muddy after a short attempt, choose the best supported option and advance. Later items still inform the score estimate. Spending four minutes to rescue one geometry item can cost two later items the student would have answered cleanly. Students need to rehearse that choice enough times that it feels normal, not like giving up.
Practice with the same clock you will see
Use a visible countdown on a computer. A kitchen timer next to a paper book is only a partial rehearsal. Extended-time students should practice the actual time on their ticket, including the decision about leaving after 180 minutes. Parents who do not want their child to leave early need to say so before test day. NYCPS will not retest a student who signs out.
Checkpoints that still matter
A checkpoint matters only while there is still time to recover. Minute 40 can change pace; minute 170 cannot. If a checkpoint never changes behavior, drop it. The useful checkpoint is the one that makes the student submit a section or speed up while the second section is still salvageable.

ELA and Math share 180 minutes. Students choose which section to start. A checkpoint only helps if it changes behavior in time.
