Who created SHSAT Prep
Eric Wiener
Eric Wiener built SHSAT Prep. He earned an SHSAT score high enough for Stuyvesant, attended the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, and graduated as salutatorian. He earned perfect scores on the ACT and on the SAT Subject Tests in Physics and Math Level 2.
He studied computer science with a focus on machine learning at the University of Michigan, then worked as a perception engineer at Zoox and DoorDash Labs and as cofounder and CTO of a Y Combinator startup.
He started SHSAT Prep when the SHSAT moved to a digital, computer-adaptive format and families had few full-length practice exams that looked and behaved like the new test.
How questions are written and reviewed
The fall 2026 SHSAT is a computer-based exam with interactive question types. A practice question is only useful when it asks for the same kind of decision the real exam asks for. SHSAT Prep reviews questions against these checks:
- The question targets a skill the SHSAT tests, at full-exam difficulty.
- It matches the format, directions, and response style in the official NYCPS practice materials for the current test.
- It has exactly one defensible answer, plausible wrong choices, and an explanation that shows the decisive step.
- It has a difficulty rating, and exams are built toward the difficulty mix of the official practice forms.
- A question that fails a check is flagged and rewritten.
SHSAT Prep exams are fixed-form digital practice. They do not copy the official computer-adaptive engine. For that, use the official NYCPS practice tests.
Independence
SHSAT Prep is an independent practice product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to NYC Public Schools or the New York City Department of Education. NYCPS sets the official dates and rules. Each article includes links to official NYCPS sources, such as the SHSAT overview and official preparation guidance, so you can check the current information.
