Start with official materials
NYCPS currently offers a Student Readiness Tool and four online practice tests. Start with the tutorial so the student is not using an official form to figure out the highlighter. Once the tools feel routine, use one official test as a baseline.
Those official forms are limited, so do not spend one every weekend. Keep at least one for a dress rehearsal under a 180-minute clock, with the section order the student plans to use. If the student still mixes up the highlighter and the equation editor, save that rehearsal for later.
What independent digital exams are for
Four official tests are not enough review cycles, so independent digital exams matter because they let the student measure again after a real repair. SHSAT Prep's current exams are fixed-form: good for content, tools, stamina, and timing, but not a copy of the official adaptive engine.
If a product lets students roam backward, add the official rule yourself: no return after a Math item, no return after a stand-alone ELA item, and return only inside an open passage set. That constraint is part of the rehearsal. A great score earned by wandering around the test does not tell you much.
Review before you schedule the next exam
Sort misses into concept, execution, and pacing, then write one reusable rule for each important miss. If the family cannot say what next week's job is, another full exam will just make the same problem louder.
Compare only exams taken under similar conditions. An untimed paper packet does not measure the same thing as a timed digital form. If the family wants a real trend, keep the product, the clock, and the no-return rule steady from one exam to the next.
A sane exam calendar
Most students do best with a baseline, a checkpoint after real repair work, and a final rehearsal, with targeted sets in between. A weekly full test is usually just a way to avoid review.
- Tutorial, then one official baseline.
- Independent digital practice while one gap is closed.
- Another full exam only when the work has changed.

Continue your study plan
A full exam measures pacing and error types. The score only helps if the next week of work changes because of it.
