The NYC SHSAT Portal has four fully functional online practice tests. NYCPS says they mirror the exam in form and content, including translated directions and footnote translations, and they open in a browser with no extra software required.
The Student Readiness Tool is a separate tutorial so students can click the highlighter, eliminator, notepad, pencil, line reader, bookmark, and equation editor before those tools matter. Do the tutorial first instead of burning a full official practice test on learning where the buttons are.
How to spend the four official tests
Treat them as scarce. Use one as an early baseline after the student already knows the tools. Use another later as a checkpoint once a real skill has been rebuilt. Save at least one for a dress rehearsal near the real administration, under a 180-minute clock, with the same section order the student plans to use.
Review each official test the same day. If a family only looks at the score and moves on, they have spent a non-replaceable official form on a mood check.
Where independent practice fits
Four official tests cannot carry a whole fall. Students need more digital items to rebuild a weak skill and then verify it on unfamiliar questions. That is the job of independent practice, including SHSAT Prep.
Independent exams should stay honest about what they are. SHSAT Prep currently offers fixed-form digital practice with the interactive formats and tools students will see, not a clone of the official adaptive engine. Use it to get more reps, not as a substitute for the official portal.
The official PDF guide
NYCPS also published a Guide to the SHSAT for 2027 admissions. It includes tools, test-day rules, and sample questions with explanations. If a translated PDF is not posted yet, NYCPS says the same content is available on the preparation pages with translation and read-aloud support.
Read the test-day list from that guide, not from a blog. What students may bring, and what they may not, belongs to NYCPS.
