SHSAT PrepHow NYCPS describes official scoring
Each item has a difficulty parameter, and the student's estimate updates as they answer. At the end, that performance is standardized into a scaled score for each section. Those two scaled scores are added into the composite used for rank-order offers. NYCPS says the final conversion step stays consistent with previous administrations.
That is why two students with the same number correct can still land in different places. A correct answer on a harder item does not carry the same weight as a correct answer on an easier one. A lucky run on easier questions is weaker evidence than solving the harder items the system keeps sending.
What last cycle's cutoffs are
NYCPS publishes the lowest qualifying score from the most recent completed cycle. The current table is last cycle's digital, non-adaptive exam, so it is history rather than this cycle's target or a weekly goal. The fall 2026 test is the first adaptive administration, and those published numbers describe a different machine.
What a SHSAT Prep score is
It is an estimate from a fixed-form digital exam. Use it to compare similar SHSAT Prep exams to each other, and do not treat it as an official composite or as a promise about a school. Different practice products will translate the same raw performance onto different scales, so compare inside one product.
Read the misses first
Tag concept, execution, inference, revision, and pacing. Those tags are the study plan. The total is just the headline. If the score rises but the unsupported-inference pile stays the same, the student probably got luckier on the passages, not stronger at the skill.
