NYCPS posts the lowest qualifying SHSAT score from the most recent completed admissions cycle. The table currently on the Specialized High Schools page is labeled for 2026 admissions, meaning students who tested in fall 2025 for seats in September 2026.
Those students took a digital, non-adaptive exam. The fall 2026 test, for September 2027 seats, is the first computer-adaptive administration. The offer process is the same: higher composite scores are placed first. The measurement underneath the composite is not the same machine.
How scoring works now
NYCPS says each item has a difficulty parameter on one scale. The student's score estimate updates after each response, or after a passage set. At the end, that performance score is standardized into a scaled section score. The two scaled scores are added into the composite used for rank-order offers.
That is why two students with the same number of correct answers can land in different places. A correct answer on a harder item contributes differently than a correct answer on an easier item. Guessing through a stretch of items is a weaker pattern than solving the items the system is sending.
How to use last cycle's scores
Use practice scores as a trend across comparable exams, not as a promise. If three timed digital exams move in the same direction, that tells you something. If one exam spikes after a lucky reading passage, that is just noise.
Rank the actual errors. A missing algebra setup, a consistent unit error, and unsupported ELA inferences are three different jobs. Closing one of those jobs is far more useful than staring at last year's Stuyvesant number.
Tenth-grade cutoff scores
The same NYCPS table shows 10th-grade lowest qualifying scores from the last cycle. Some of those figures jump far above the 9th-grade column because the seat count is tiny, which is a reminder that 9th-grade applicants are competing for leftovers rather than a number to study toward.
If the family is using a cutoff at all, use it only to decide whether Specialized High Schools are one path among several. Keep a complete high school application either way.

Will NYCPS publish a new cutoff before the fall 2026 test?
No. The lowest qualifying score is known only after that cycle's offers are made. Anything labeled for 2026 admissions is last cycle's result.
Should a family ignore historical scores completely?
No. They show that some schools fill at higher composites than others, and that 10th-grade seats are scarce. They should not become a weekly target.
