How NYCPS assigns seats
NYCPS works down the score list from the highest composite. The top-scoring student gets their first-choice school. The next student gets their first choice if a seat remains; if not, NYCPS tries the second choice, then the third, and so on.
A student who does not get their first choice lost that seat to higher scores, not to a hidden rubric. A student who gets their fourth choice watched the first three fill before their name came up. A student with no Specialized offer listed only schools that filled above their score.
You are only considered for schools you list
NYCPS is explicit: students are not considered for a testing Specialized High School that they did not list. Leaving Brooklyn Tech off the list because 'we would never go to Brooklyn' is fine if that is true. Leaving it off because a parent thinks it is a strategy move is how a family gets zero offers.
There is no Specialized waitlist and no appeal that adds a school after the fact, so the list on the registration is the list.
LaGuardia is a different process
LaGuardia High School is a Specialized High School. It does not use the SHSAT. Students apply through studio auditions and must meet a documented academic floor in core subjects. A student can receive more than one LaGuardia studio offer.
Do not describe 'the nine Specialized High Schools' as if they share one exam. Eight schools use the SHSAT and one uses auditions, and a family can pursue both.
Keep the rest of the high school application
Registering for the SHSAT does not replace the broader NYC high school application, so most students should still submit a full list of other programs. Specialized offers are one path, not a plan B that appears automatically.
For the 2026-27 cycle, NYCPS enrollment support currently lists October 6 as the date applications open and December 4 as the high school application close. Those dates are marked subject to change. Confirm them on the official page when you register.

Frequently asked questions
Do grades help if two students have the same SHSAT score?
NYCPS says the SHSAT is the only criterion for the eight testing schools. Do not plan around a hidden academic tie-break that the official page does not describe.
Can a student get more than one testing Specialized offer?
No. The process produces at most one offer among the eight testing schools. LaGuardia studio offers are separate.

Preference order is not a cutoff puzzle. List the eight testing schools in the order the student would accept them, then confirm the current official list.
