Start by confirming that the student is an NYC resident in eighth grade, or a first-time ninth grader. School type does not disqualify them: public, charter, private, parochial, and home-schooled students can all register if they meet the residency and grade rules.
Get into MySchools early. NYCPS students usually work through the counselor, while non-public families may need help from the current school or a Family Welcome Center. A locked account in the last week is a very preventable problem.
What to enter besides the test checkbox
Rank the testing Specialized High Schools the student would attend. Mark Saturday or Sunday restrictions if they apply. Confirm accommodations with the current school so they appear on the ticket. Registration is also where that preference order becomes official.
The SHSAT registration is not the full high school application. Students still need the broader application if they want non-Specialized options. Those are separate deadlines.
The dates that are posted right now
NYCPS enrollment support, updated July 22, 2026, currently lists this 2026-27 timeline: applications including Specialized High Schools become available October 6, SHSAT registration closes October 30, and the high school and LaGuardia application closes December 4. Results are listed for March 3. The page says the dates are subject to change.
Use those dates only as the current posted calendar, and recheck the official page when you actually register rather than copying them into a family group chat as if they were carved in stone.
After you submit
MySchools says test tickets become available about two weeks after the registration deadline. Read the ticket and check the name, date, site, and accommodations. If something is wrong, contact the counselor immediately.
Recent arrivals who missed the fall process should ask a Family Welcome Center about summer testing. That path has its own eligibility window and is not a second chance for students who already lived in the city during the regular cycle.
