SHSAT ELA Study Guide

The ELA section is 50 questions of reading comprehension plus revising and editing. Students who treat it like vocabulary trivia or a sentence-matching game miss the questions that actually separate scores.

Reading: prove the whole choice

Read the passage carefully. NYCPS explicitly tells students not to skim, and the answer has to come from the text on the screen. A correct option has to answer the question and be supported in every important part by the passage. Prior knowledge of birds, history, or science does not help, even when the topic looks familiar.

Before arguing with the choices, name the job: central idea, detail, inference, structure, or word meaning. A sentence can be true and still fail the question. Official wrong answers often borrow a real detail, then push it one step past what the passage actually supports.

Revising: fix the text problem

Passage-based revising asks what improves the whole piece: a missing claim, a vague noun, a paragraph that needs a better opening, or a sentence that should be cut. 'It sounds better' is not a reason. Name the text problem the winning choice fixed, or the student guessed.

Stand-alone language items are different. They target a tense shift, a modifier, or a bad combination of sentences, and they cannot be revisited after the student advances. Treat them like Math: answer, check, and move instead of saving them for a later pass that will never happen.

Use the passage-set window

Inside a set, students can bookmark and return until they submit, so use that window. After they submit, let the set go. The clock is shared with Math, and a student who relitigates passage one during passage two is spending the second section twice.

What to review

For every close choice, name the exact phrase that makes the winner stronger. If the student cannot point to the text, they guessed. That becomes next week's drill, not a vague plan to 'read more.' Unsupported inferences on timed passages get fixed by pointing to the sentence.
