SHSAT PrepRead the passage before the questions
NYCPS tells students not to skim. They need the big idea and the important details. If a paragraph is confusing, reread that paragraph. Prior knowledge of the topic does not count. The birds-sleeping-in-flight sample can be answered only from the study described on the page.
Highlight sparingly: a turning point, a result, a contrast. If the whole passage is yellow, the tool did nothing useful. Notes should be a few words, not a second version of the passage.
Name the question type before you argue
Central idea, specific evidence, inference, structure, or word meaning. Those jobs use different parts of the text. A true detail is a wrong answer to a structure question. A supported inference is a wrong answer to 'which sentence from the passage.'
Try to answer before reading the options. Then eliminate choices that fail either test: they do not address the question, or they add a claim the passage never earned.
The whole-choice test
Read every clause in the option. Official wrong answers are often half true. They cite a real study, then attach the wrong conclusion. They describe a real structure, then name the wrong purpose. If one phrase is unsupported, the choice is wrong.
Inferences stay small. Combine two details into the least extra claim that answers the question. If the passage says a character hides a letter and changes the subject, the supported inference is discomfort or concealment, not an entire invented motive.
Use the passage-set window, then let it go
Inside a passage set, students can revisit questions until they submit the set. Use that. Bookmark the item that still feels thin, finish the others, then return with the whole passage in mind. Submit only when the set is done.
After the set is submitted, those answers are locked, so do not spend the next passage relitigating the last one. The clock is shared with Math.

NYCPS tells students to read the text first, then the questions. The passage set is short enough that a careful first read is cheaper than hunting.
Do poetry items need a different method?
Start with what happens in the poem, then connect a pattern or image to a supported change in idea or feeling. Do not jump to a symbol the text never earns.
