SHSAT PrepWho is eligible
NYCPS allows current NYC residents who are in ninth grade for the first time. A student repeating ninth grade is not in that group. If grade status is messy, ask the counselor or a Family Welcome Center for a determination. Do not guess from a forum.
The exam itself is the same administration as the eighth-grade test: 50 ELA, 50 Math, 180 minutes, computer-adaptive beginning fall 2026. The difference is the number of tenth-grade seats on the other side.
Why 10th-grade cutoff scores jump around
On the current NYCPS admissions page, some 10th-grade lowest qualifying scores from the last cycle sit far above the 9th-grade column. Bronx Science and Brooklyn Latin are the clearest examples. That is what a tiny leftover seat count does to a number.
Do not turn those figures into a study target. They tell you the market was thin. They do not tell you what an adaptive score will be worth this cycle, and they do not tell you which schools will even have tenth-grade seats.
How ninth graders should prepare
Start from current coursework, not from last year's eighth-grade binder. A student in geometry and Algebra I should practice the official math content areas, including multi-step items and digital entry, not a middle-school packet they already outgrew.
Take one timed digital baseline early. If the misses still come from eighth-grade skills, rebuild those. If the misses are rushed setups on material the student already knows, then the job is exam behavior: the no-return rule, the shared clock, and a stopping rule.
Keep the rest of the high school application
Tenth-grade Specialized seats are limited enough that a family should complete the regular high school process either way. A Specialized offer is extra, not a replacement for a school the student can actually attend in September.
If the student already attends a school they would keep, be honest about that. The SHSAT is optional, and a stressful second attempt only makes sense if a testing Specialized High School would be a real improvement.
