SHSAT PrepWhat 'multi-step' means here
It does not just mean more arithmetic or bigger numbers. It means the student has to represent one relationship, use that result in a second relationship, and then report a quantity that may not be the first thing they found.
The official sample with two consecutive integers shows the pattern clearly: write the integers, use their sum, change each integer, then multiply. Students who stop after finding -8 have done legitimate algebra and still missed the item.
Work one written step at a time
NYCPS's own advice is to write the steps. The lorgs-and-dalts sample is a conversion, then another conversion, then a sum. Students who try to do that in their head drop a rate. Students who write '140 lorgs = $20' can see the next move.
If a step needs a formula, write the formula with the values substituted. 'P = 2L + 2W' is not busywork when the ratio is 3:2 and the perimeter is 510. It is how the student avoids doubling one pair of sides twice.
Where strong students still lose points
They answer the first useful number they produce. They change the ratio order halfway through. They treat a rate as if it were a total. They enter an equivalent expression the equation editor will not accept, then spend two minutes fighting the palette.
Those are exam skills. Drill them on mixed digital items, not on a page titled 'percent.' The student should not know in advance which topic is coming. The official exam will not announce it.
How to practice without flooding the week
Take eight mixed items. Require a written target and written steps. Review only the items where a step was skipped or the target was swapped. That is enough for one session.
Once the student can explain the missed step, verify on new items, then put the skill back into a timed section. Isolated mastery that disappears under the clock is not mastery.
