SHSAT PrepWrite the requested quantity first
Before any algebra, write down what the question wants, with units. Perimeter, not a side. The smaller integer, not the sum. Dollars after the exchange, not the number of lorgs. Official sample items hide the requested quantity in ordinary English on purpose.
If the student cannot name the target, they are not ready to compute. That one habit catches the most common SHSAT miss: solving a real problem cleanly, but not the problem that was actually asked.
Turn words into symbols on purpose
NYCPS's own samples do this in public. 'Sum' becomes plus. 'Consecutive integers' becomes x and x + 1. 'Twice as many as Keiko' becomes 2K. Students who keep those phrases in English try to hold the whole story in working memory and then drop a condition.
Use scrap paper or the notepad, whichever is faster for this student. Label each variable with a short English phrase. 'J = Jenny's starting marbles' takes three seconds and prevents solving for the wrong person.
Draw only when the drawing carries a condition
A rectangle with sides 3x and 2x is worth drawing because the picture holds the ratio. A marble story is not worth drawing. If the pencil is decorating the item, it is stealing time from the equation.
Geometry items still need the unstated facts the student is expected to know: what perimeter means, when angles on a line sum to 180, when triangles are similar. Those facts will not be printed in the booklet. If a student does not have them, no diagram will invent them.
Check the target, then advance
After the computation, reread the requested quantity. Many distractors are the intermediate value the student just produced: the width instead of the length, the sum instead of the product, one conversion instead of the total.
Then advance. The official Math section does not let the student come back, so a clean translation plus a target check is the whole method. Re-solving from scratch 'just to be sure' is how the clock dies.
