SHSAT PrepWhat paper still teaches well
Paper is fine for learning a proportion setup, a triangle relationship, or the difference between a central-idea question and an inference question. If a student needs 20 repetitions of isolating a variable, a workbook is cheaper than another full exam.
Paper is also honest about reading stamina. A student who cannot stay with a dense informational passage on paper will not magically do it on a screen. Keep some untimed reading on paper if that is how the student still learns.
What paper cannot rehearse
Paper lets students skip, star, and return. The live SHSAT does not, except inside an open ELA passage set. Paper has no equation editor, no glossed words, no answer eliminator, and no 180-minute shared clock on one screen.
Paper also cannot adapt. A book presents a fixed sequence. The official exam updates difficulty as the student works. Practicing only a fixed paper form teaches the student to expect the next item to look like the last chapter, not like a response to their previous answer.
How to split paper and digital work
Use paper or short digital drills to rebuild one skill. Then use official NYCPS practice and other digital exams to apply that skill under the real constraints: a computer, a clock, built-in tools, and the no-return rule.
If a family can afford only a little digital practice, spend it on timed sections rather than another paperback of mixed questions. Content without exam behavior is how students arrive on test day startled by the format.
Watch the copyright date
Anything written for the old 114-question digital form, or for the paper exam before that, will misstate length, field items, and navigation. The current official form is 50 and 50 with a 180-minute shared clock.
If a book still talks about scrambled paragraphs or logical reasoning, it is describing a retired exam. Use it only if the underlying math or grammar skill is still current. Do not use it as a format guide.

Is a printed SHSAT Prep exam a good idea?
Print a missed question for review if that helps. Take the timed exam on a computer. The product exists to rehearse the digital form.
