SHSAT PrepThe 20-minute review
Pick five questions, not the whole exam. Choose two misses the student expected to get, two misses they still cannot explain, and one correct item that took too long. Ask the same three questions every time: What was this asking? What did you do first? Where did that stop working?
Write the answer in one line, such as 'you solved for the width and the question asked for the perimeter' or 'you picked a true sentence that does not answer the question.' That line becomes the assignment. It does not need to turn into a lecture.
What parents should not do
Do not re-solve the item while the student watches, unless the student asks for a worked example after they have tried to name the break. Watching a parent be good at math is not practice.
Do not compare the score to a cousin, a cutoff table, or a Specialized building. Those comparisons do not change Thursday's work. They do change whether the student will show the next report.
Logistics parents are actually good at
Parents can own the calendar: official registration, accommodations paperwork, ticket check, and a quiet block for one timed exam. They can also own the official links so the student is not practicing on a random PDF from 2016.
If the family has a SHSAT Prep parent account, use the weekly picture to decide whether the student worked, not whether the student is 'ready for Stuy.' Ready is a trend across comparable exams. Worked is a fact about this week.
When to get another adult involved
If every review becomes an argument, stop. Hire a tutor for the skill, or let the student review with a teacher. The parent can still run the calendar.
If the student needs accommodations, the parent should be in contact with the counselor now, not after a frustrating practice test in October. That is a school process, not a kitchen process.

Frequently asked questions
Should parents sit in the room during a practice test?
Only if the student wants a proctor for timing. Do not hint, sigh, or watch over a shoulder. The official exam will not include you.
How often should a parent review?
After each full exam, and after a week that was supposed to close a named gap. Daily hovering is not a review system.
